Planning digipak

Digipaks typically consist of a gatefold  paperboard or cardboard outer binding, with one or more plastic trays for the CD.Digipak-style packaging is often used for CD singles or special editions of CD albums. They grew in popularity among record labels and recording artists in the early 2000s.A jewel CD case is the original compact disc case that has been used since the compact disc was first released in 1982. It is a three-piece plastic case, which usually contains a CD along with the liner notes and a back card. They are constructed into 4 sides, where most of the detail is solely on the front and the back. Jewel CD cases don't tend to have any properties which help to further promote artists which is why digipaks are used instead, they tend to give the audience a more personal feel which creates a deeper artist and audience relationship. Elements such as the personal message within the digipak is what creates the relationship between the audience as they able to read the thoughts and feelings from the artist himself. There are also various differences between the digipak and Jewel CD cases, four example the Digipack has six sides so there is more opportunity visible artwork, information (such as lyrics) or promotions. This way the artist has a better chance at attracting potential buyers, As they will see digipak as more than just a disc of music, it is also a collectable item for the audience as well. Jewel CD cases tend to only contain a front and back cover with the CD which therefore means there is less for the audience.

In terms of the colours the digipak consisted of many vibrant colours such as blue.red, green and  yellow. The reason for using his colours is that it has been a constant theme throughout our music video and these colours have also been used in our magazine advertisement. These colours also stand out more to the target audience which may make the Digi pack more appealing to the target audience as generally people tend to enjoy looking at coliform vibrant images as opposed to more done and colourless images. The colours we have chosen also tend to be quite conventional to the dance genre as again as previously mentioned they are all vibrant colours that stand out which is quite essential within the dance genre as it is known for being colourful with in many settings such as club settings and generally throughout. The colours will make the album appeal to to the target audience as it will give them a slight indication of the theme of the album, it shows them that there is a more summer-like feel to the album which may make then reminisce of Their summer memories or perhaps make some are memories. The chosen colours well promote our artist effectively as in a way it represents him, it shows the audience that he is quite a lively person hence the choice of the vibrant colours.

Generally we have conformed to the conventions of the genre, in reference to the Digi pack we have chosen colours which are typical of the dance genre and various images on the digipack relate to the dance genre, for example the club setting and DJ decks are of course directly related as they are seen in the dance scene. Perhaps we may have subverted conventions with the use of the office setting which is not typically showing in dance music videos or dance music generally however We felt that the setting was very relatable to our target audience as a large majority of them will be working in an office setting and experience the emotions that our artist goes through with getting excited to go to a club after a long days work at the office. Aside from the office setting I do not see any other subverted conventions that have been used, although the narrative may seem subverted in certain aspects as not all dance music videos tend to contain relationships however at the same time while doing research we have also found quite a few music videos that contained A relationship between A male and female actor.

The images used consist of both main settings which are the club setting and Office setting, as well as images of DJ decks and A picture of the artists looking out of his office window. The club and office setting which will be the album's Front cover Will show the audience the main two settings of the music video, the way in which the images are shown along with the artists in the middle how's the audience that this is two separate lifestyles the artist lives. These particular images can be seen as extremely related ball to the target audience as they too Will have A similar split in the life styles which of course makes the album seem far more appealing. This also shows the audience the general theme of the album which they may find appealing as before buying the album they have a brief idea of the concept. The image of the DJ decks simply shows the audience A conventional piece of iconography which they can relate with the dance genre, this just gives the target audience opportunity to associate more with this genre and can also insinuate that the artist has DJ-ing talents which may engage the audience further. The other image showing the artist looking out of his Office window shows the audience Little more of the artists life as they will be able to see quite a lavish office which shows the target audience that the artists is clearly quite successful which may make him seem more appealing and inspirational.

The design and layout of a digipak creates a massive impact on how appealing it seems to the target audience.  The design or layout of this digipack clearly shows that the main features are the bright colours that are used in every section as well as the importance of the settings such as the office and club. The layout and design of the the first slide shows the main settings of the music video which is a picture of the iconic gherkin building to show the audience where the artist is seen to be working. There is also a club setting on the left side of this slide which shows a club setting however it has been designed to have a split in the middle showing the audience that these are two significant places to the artist and could also be significant to themselves as they too will most likely be in both enviroments a large majority of the time. The typography in this slide has also been layed out to show the audience the name of the artist and album in a more subtle manor however the use of the neon blue coloured lights will make it stand out further to audience and still sticks to conventions of the dance genre as neon lighting is used in many aspects of this genre. The layout and design of the CD is similar to the album cover as it shows a split image of colourful lighting on one half and a black and white solid colour on the other. The reason for the split is to relate further to the theme of a split lifestyle with the colourful lighting representing a flamboyant style of life and the black and white side of the CD represents a more serious and professional side as these two colours symbolise professonalism.

The typography and language Used in the digipak and do not take a major role in making the album More appealing as we decided on a more simplistic approach as their was not A large amount of language used apart from the message which the artist had wrote. The message needed to be easy to read so we decided not to use any flamboyant types of font as the meaning of the message was the focal point of that section. The language used in the album front cover is again written with relatively simple as we want the audience to easily read the the title and so forth however we've decided to use coloured Font in order to make the title and artist name stand out further to he audience which should hopefully make it more recognisable and noticeable to the target audience, we have also decided to stick with the theme using Blue as the font colour.

While creating our digipaks we found this planning stage extremely helpful as it allowed us to get a better idea of what will be needed when we create our final versions, it also helps as we have a greater understanding of what photos I need to be taken which make the process more efficient. In terms of photo shop it also helped us as while planning we were thinking ahead of possible anything styles that can be used in his application to add to our designs. As previously mentioned I do feel more aware of what is needed for this digipak well as I have clearly planned out what images I need, the style of fonts ,colours etc before producing my final version.

  1. You have provided an overall basic analysis of your plan, explaining why you have chosen some elements to use within your digipak, but not really exploring the reasons behind these choices, or thinking about how the audience can build a relationship with the artist as a result

    You need to:
    1) Make sure you state whether you will include a personal message/acknowledgment from the artist and why
    2) Make sure you explain all elements fully in terms of what they create for the audience and how it will help promote the artist - your points are too brief and summed up
    3) Elaborate on some of your points by explaining how you want elements used to represent and promote the artist
    4) Make sure you cover all bullet points: style of language needs to be considered more particularly with reference to the personal message
    5) You need to talk about all 6 sides of the digipak
